Are you in need of ANY kind of Cell Phone Help?

Cellular and Wireless is always changing. And when it comes to getting cell phone help, it's a mixed blessing especially for cell phone beginners and technophobic users alike as constant change makes it as frustrating as it is fascinating. I remember in 1998 when I used to have to call into customer care and on behalf of my customers. ‘Jennifer’ would often answer my calls and she knew my voice, my name, the company I was calling from and could help me solve any cell phone problem from billing to technical. Weird huh? What are the chances today? Exactly.

Nice and Slow

As cell phone costs decreased and plans offered more minutes it more or less became an essential for any person who leads an active lifestyle verses being a priviledge for only select professions or senior level staff within a company. With ‘everybody’ now being able to afford a cell phone and a plan, the industry began to rapidly grow. Essentially the ability to buy phones became easier, but the ability to get cell phone help when you needed it, did not. Enter forums, thank goodness! :)

Ultimately the cell phone company’s growth was driven by a sales centric model as opposed to a service centric model, meaning their revenues were measured mainly by the number of new net phone activations that they sold in a quarter. But what about all those users who were already paying service? Why did they not get the proper cell phone help or training?

Bcause as the industry continued to grow the greatest opportunity and most money to be made was in sales as opposed to providing cell phone help and support. And most people who needed cell phone help, could have honestly read the manual. So in the U.S. everybody was selling phones, laundromats, barber shops and beauty salons, the dollar store, clothing stores, gas stations and convenience stores, remember those days?

Sales volume was getting so ridiculous that instead of stocking cell phones in stores or sending a representative to the customer site to deliver the phones and help with the set up, cell phone companies started shipping phones overnight directly to the customers. They simply didn’t have enough sales representatives to meet the demands of providing training and help, even at the basic level to their existing accounts. As time passed we no longer had one customer care representative that handled 'everything' from selling your phone to providing help with your cell phone bill, but instead we spoke to one person if we had issues with billing and another if we had a broken phone and yet another if we wanted to order another cell phone. Cell phone company's operations continued to expand and decentralize with hope that everyone would master their little slice of ‘customer care and service pie’ and the industry continued to rapidly grow and emerge. And it still is!

To add to the mix instead of just cell phones, along came BlackBerry’s and other Smartphones which required a different level of help and support. In house IT departments often have to manage these wireless devices.

Unfortunately, while cell phones and their applications are becoming more sophisticated to grow with the needs of the market, the service, training and ability to get help for those aforementioned are not. The people who have lost out most are the non technical and first time cell phone users.
